If you have decided to purchase gold coins to add to your investment portfolio, there are a number of things you can do to ensure your assets are safe. First of all, the best way to ensure privacy of your purchase is to pay for the transaction in cash. Doing so will leave no paper trail for anyone to follow; therefore, no one should know about your purchase except you and whomever you choose to confide in.

This brings us to another important step in the plan to keep your assets safe: don’t tell everyone. If you want to help others in their investment strategy, that’s fine – give them tips, hints and ideas, but don’t tell them you have actually made the purchase yourself. That knowledge is best kept to yourself and a select inner circle of those you trust. Consider this: even if you told a friend and they inadvertently released that information to someone you or they didn’t know quite so well, the information is out and you could become a target of theft. All the information has to do is flow into the hands of one wrong person, and it could cause you grief and trouble. It’s best just not to talk about your asset collection at all.

Another idea that will help keep your investment in gold coins protected is to purchase a personal home safe. Safes are relatively inexpensive items, yet they can offer a great degree of security. If you decide to purchase one, plan to bolt it to your floor or the foundation of your home. If you can cart a safe into your home, it’s a safe bet that a burglar can cart it right out again. They don’t have to know the combination or open it; they could take the entire safe and work on opening it at a later time in another location. By bolting the safe to the floor, it becomes a much more difficult and time-consuming operation for a thief. Taking the time to try and unbolt the safe would just add more time that they expose themselves in the crime, leaving more opportunity for them to get caught.

Some investors decide to bury their treasure. This is a plausible option, but don’t do it in the daylight where people can see you, unless you cleverly disguise your actions. If you are doing some remodeling or renovation to your home, and people get used to seeing you working around various parts of your house, that could be used as a good opportunity to hide your treasure. Make sure your gold coins are separated in plastic baggies or another protective covering to keep them safe from being scratched in their hiding places.

There are many places within your home to safely locate your round bullion precious metal pieces. But for heaven’s sake, don’t hide it under your mattress. That’s one of the oldest tricks and the first place many burglars will look. Do not put your metal assets in with your jewelry, either, as that is another sure locale where thieves will search. Get creative, yet stay smart to protect your valuable assets.

This is your chance to get creative. A number of great potential hideouts for your gold coins are probably ready and available in your home. You just have to “think outside the box” to get to them. Naturally, you would never want to hide your treasure in the normal places, such as 1) under the mattress; 2) in the cookie jar; or 3) in your jewelry chest or clothing drawer. These are the first places criminals will search. Don’t hide your metal assets in the freezer, either, or behind a brick in the fireplace. You need to get more creative than that.

Because technology has gotten so advanced, criminals now have the aid of metal detectors to assist in finding your metal valuables. To combat this trickery, you have to plan for its eventual entrance into your home. Hide your precious metal assets among other metals, such as silverware or loose pocket change. You can wrap a small number of your metal treasures in a towel and tape them inside, under, or on top of a silverware drawer in the kitchen because the metal detector will be drawn to the silverware and the thief will usually pass up the silverware drawer.

One creative inventor has developed a hiding spot that looks just like a real soda can. And, for all those thieves with metal detectors, a soda can is aluminum and will set off the mechanisms in the detector but the thief won’t take a second look at a soda can.

Another unusual location to place a small amount of your round bullion assets is inside a flower pot, with real flowers and real dirt. You could hide it under an artificial selection as well, but the real one will probably get less notice from a prospective thief. The element of which your metal treasure is composed is very resistant to outside environmental sources, such as water and dirt. Therefore, your treasure should be safe. You can always wrap a small number of items inside plastic wrap before burying them in the plant’s dirt, if your plant is big enough.

It is a good idea to allocate your gold coins to more than one safe hiding place; utilize several. You might want to keep a few on your person, in your purse, in your briefcase, or even located somewhere in your vehicle, just to always have a few with you. If you take your vehicle in for service or maintenance, always remember to remove your treasure first.

Another unusual hiding place is an empty book. These storage places are made just for this reason. Locating some articles of your treasure inside an empty book and placing it on your bookshelves among numerous other books would take an incredibly long time for a burglar to find. Burglars don’t usually have that kind of time to expend on an extensive search that could very well prove fruitless.

You might want to change the hiding locations of some of your gold coins from time to time. Ah, but find a way for you to remember where they all are. Sometimes it is easy to forget yourself where you have hidden them.

Having physical and tangible assets in your home requires the commitment on your part of finding safe storage places for them. Gold coins are a wonderful resource to have on hand and as part of your financial portfolio. However, having charge of them yourself necessitates a secure and safe place for them to reside while they are in your care.

Diversification is always a good idea, whether it be in your financial retirement portfolio or in the locations you choose to store your treasures. The old saying of “don’t keep all your eggs in one basket” makes complete financial sense.

Safe Deposit Box
Many owners choose to place their treasures in a safe deposit box within the secure confines of a bank. Others point to the limitations that this kind of security can bring, such as only being able to access your assets during bank hours and the fact that safe deposit box contents are not insured in the event of a bank robbery. As well, while in bank possession it is always possible that an event like the precious metal confiscation of 1933 could affect your property.

Bury Them
Some people choose to bury their gold coins. If you choose this method, only do so under the guise of nightfall so that prying eyes won’t find the secret location of your stash. Also, make sure it is buried deeper than four feet as that is the average depth a metal detector can locate metal objects.

Home Personal Safe
Others choose to purchase a home safe. This is a good method as long as you ensure the safe is bolted to the floor and/or the foundation of the house. Burglars could conceivably carry away, or cart away in a wheelbarrow, your safe and all its contents to be opened at a later time.

Creative, Unusual Locations In Your Home
Look around your home and use your imagination to discern a variety of good hiding spots that would not easily be discovered by burglars. Rule out the normal places: jewelry boxes, under mattresses, in cookie jars, etc. You will have to be cleverer than that to outwit some criminals who might be used to the “normal” tricks.

Carry Them On Your Person
You might consider carrying some of your treasure on your person; that way it will be with you at all times. That could prove a little more difficult to do, plus if you try to carry too much it might become rather heavy. However, to diversify, you might want to consider placing some gold coins in your purse, pockets, briefcase, or any other item that you constantly have with you.

Conceal Them In Your Vehicle
Other owners of the precious metal assets believe that your vehicle is a good place to store your treasures. As long as your car doesn’t get stolen, this is a good plan. If you need to take your vehicle in for major repairs or maintenance, however, you will want to remember to remove your treasure stash.

Don’t Talk About Your Investment
Another security measure to help keep your valuable assets safe is to not talk about it. Don’t tell a group of friends, some of whom you may not know as well as others. Don’t talk about your purchase in a crowded room where others have a chance of overhearing your story.

Using several different security measures, as opposed to just one, allows you a greater flexibility in protection for your assets.

Metal detectors can be great fun for the treasure hunter when strolling along abandoned sites, hiking trails, or other public places where a hidden gem is just waiting to be discovered. However, in a criminal’s hands, metal detectors can become a tool for a thief seeking out your collection of gold coins. Listed here are a few tips to keep your precious metal assets safe from a thief using a metal detector for the wrong reasons.

1. Hide your treasure among normal pocket change.

Loose change is going to draw attention from even the most basic metal detector. If you have a change jar or container, secretly mix some of your prized round bullion treasures in with it. If you have a container on a dresser where you periodically throw your loose change, include a stash of the “real thing” just underneath or hidden near it, so that if a thief’s metal detector goes off, he’ll just see a few nickels and dimes.

2. Locate your metal valuables in or near a silverware drawer.

Silverware will make a metal detector sound off so why not incorporate some of your gold coins in, or near, your silverware drawer? Wrap them in a towel and place them in the most inconspicuous place possible. Or, if you can maneuver underneath the drawer, use duct tape to fasten them to the bottom of the drawer.

3. Utilize the recesses around your plumbing fixtures or other metal appliances.

Many homes have plumbing fixtures that are made of metal or copper. If your home does, you could take advantage of that knowledge to locate some valuables there. Place an inconspicuous bundle next to your pipe fittings and most thieves will decide it’s your plumbing pipes setting off the metal detector. Other metal appliances could be utilized for the same purpose, including the backs of a washer or dryer, metal household appliances, or metal exercise equipment.

4. Use an empty soda can as a treasure container.

You can purchase a soda can that is a clone. It is actually an empty soda can made to look just like a real soda can, but it is hollow inside so that you can store your treasures. A soda can sitting on a shelf will be a beacon for a metal detector, but unless the burglar is really thirsty, he’ll probably leave it alone. You could probably fashion an empty soda can to look like a real one yourself, if you have the proper tools. But it has to be an expert reproduction so that a thief will not become suspicious.

5. If you have a metal detector, try scouting your hiding places out and see what happens.

There’s nothing better than putting your theories to the test yourself with a metal detector so you won’t have to wonder what one will pick up. If you decide to bury your gold coins outside in the soil, you will need to dig deeper than four feet to find a hiding place. Metal detectors are known to work within four feet.

By strategizing and optimizing your plan for safekeeping, you can outwit a thief with a metal detector and keep your assets safe if your home were to become the target of burglars.

It might seem a rather odd idea at first, but it does have its merits. You can store gold coins in your car, truck, or SUV to help keep them safe from other risk factors. The general rule of thumb is to secure your assets in a variety of places, just as your financial investment portfolio should consist of diverse ventures.

There are a great number of hiding places in your vehicle when you stop to think about it. You can hide your treasure in the glove compartment (although that would be the first place someone would look for valuable assets), under the hood, under the seats, or in the trunk space, just to name a few places. If placed under the hood, near the motor or other vehicle parts that get hot, you would need to insure you have the bullion treasures encased in a fireproof container.

Many small places under the seats, and even under the carpet and in the trunk would make excellent places to hide small valuable assets. Make sure you seal the gold coins within a plastic covering or in a heat-resistant carrier to help protect them from the environment. You would also want to remember to remove them if you had to take your car in for repairs or maintenance.

The benefits of keeping these precious metal assets in the vehicle you drive are 1) to keep them out of your home in case of burglary; 2) to keep them safe if your home were to be involved in a natural disaster; and 3) to travel safely with you wherever you go. If you keep just a few of the round bullion units hidden in your vehicle, if you ever had to leave your home or your town in an emergency, they would be with you if you needed to cash them in.

Recommendations for hiding your valuable assets in your vehicle include making a hiding place where you would need a screwdriver to gain access to. This would make it more time-consuming for would-be thieves to try to find your treasure, if they had any idea there was some there. Something thieves don’t generally have a lot of is time. Having to use a screwdriver to get to your secret hiding place would also deter anyone who is curious enough to poke around and find something, if they don’t have one of the handy tools on them.

Another disadvantage, however, to storing gold coins in your car is if your vehicle were to be involved in a severe accident that totaled it, it might take your mangled treasure to the scrap yard with it. No one wants to think of those things happening, but when planning a strategy to secure your assets and plan your financial future, all scenarios must be considered to come up with the winning approach.

Another idea is that if your home were to get burglarized when you were out of town and your car was parked safely in the garage, a vehicle is not the first place a thief is going to think to look for hidden treasure. Criminals are generally short on time and there are a few “regular” spots they try and hit. Chances are, unless you have a brand new fancy sports car and they know it, they will be in and out of the house without ever thinking of searching a vehicle for hidden treasure.

OK, so you’ve made the important decision of adding gold coins to your financial investment portfolio. They are one of the smartest speculations you could have chosen. Once you take physical possession of the lovelies, what do you do with them to protect them and keep them safe and secure?

Just as diversifying your investment portfolio is wise, so is maximizing the locations where you hide your treasures. Divide them up into increments of your choosing and decide on different methods for storing them. You might want to keep some in a safe deposit box at the bank, but not all. Using a safe deposit box as a method of storage can be safe, but you 1) limit your access to your treasure to only banking hours; 2) they are not protected if the bank were to get robbed; and 3) there is always the possibility of the government confiscating the precious metal as it did in 1933.

To locate the safest storage locations in your home, use your imagination. Think “outside the box” as the saying goes. Put a certain amount of gold coins in one place, another set in another place, and so on. Don’t use so many places that you confuse yourself, however, or forget all the places you have hidden them. If your treasure it allocated to different hiding places, it’s a pretty safe bet that even in the worst case scenario of a successful robbery, the thief won’t find all of your assets.

Keep in mind that today’s burglars are more tech-savvy than in days of old. With the advent of metal detectors, they can more easily locate your metal treasure. There are tricks, though, to throw them off, if they choose to use this sophisticated tool for criminal purposes. For instance, locate your precious metal assets in with, or next to, kitchen silverware, because metal silverware is going to set off a metal detector anyway. The burglar won’t suspect that anything else is in there other than the metal silverware. If you really want to get sneaky, wrap your metal assets in a towel and tape it under the silverware drawer, if you can access it. You can also keep an allotment of treasure in with, or under, regular pocket change. The pocket change will set off the metal detector but the thief won’t know there is anything more to it than normal loose change. Burglars are not likely to spend a great deal of time sorting through a variety of small items when they can go on to higher dollar articles that they can readily see and grab.

If you keep your purchase of gold coins a secret, there will be less chance of discovery because no one will know to look for them. If you go to a party or other social event and brag about your recent purchase, you are just opening the door to inviting possible problems into your home. Keep that knowledge safe with you and possibly one or two others whom you have complete and total trust and confidence in. It will just be your little secret.
