Krugerrand gold coins for sale have always been a popular investment, especially when you can purchase them for a lower premium price or in the secondary market.  Statistics show that more Krugerrands have been minted, at over 42 million since 1967, than the entirety of all the other bullion coinage combined.  The early 1970s and 1980s saw a huge demand as investors sought to seek a safe haven from rising inflation at that time.  When the Krugerrands were first imported, because they have the status of being “legal tender” in South Africa, they were allowed to be imported into some countries (many, but not all) without any duty or import taxes, or VAT.

However, Krugerrand coinage was banned from being imported into the United States in 1985 due to political conflicts between the U.S. and the South African government.  At the time, the ban did not affect the more than 22 million Krugerrands that were already in the U.S., and buying and selling of these treasures continued.  The U.S. Congress lifted the ban on Krugerrands in 1994 and it was legitimate to buy and sell them once again.

During the Krugerrands’ nine-year absence from the import market, American Eagles captured the popular majority share of the U.S. market.  Therefore, when re-entering the bullion market, Krugerrands were discounted so they could compete.  Apparently, that strategy has worked because they remain one of the favorite gold coins for sale in the industry.  They enjoy very active trading in today’s market.

Both brands of monetary instruments carry a special design.  Likewise, they come in four distinct sizes:  1/10-ounce, 1/4-ounce, 1/2-ounce, and 1 ounce.  The Krugerrand 1-ounce version can usually be found in large quantities.  When you can find any of the other three fractional-ounce units, you will likely find they will be significantly cheaper than their American Eagle counterparts.  The secondary market is where Krugerrands enjoy the most attention and the best prices.  They have been called the best-selling bullion in history and the most successful.

Krugerrands are legal tender in South Africa, whereas American Eagles are legal tender but they do not sell at those values.  Their values are symbolic and their real value comes from the amount of gold content plus a small premium because of the type of currency they are.  The 1-ounce Krugerrand gold coin actually contains one ounce of pure gold and was the first on the market to do so.  They are prestigious and constitute a sound investment to any portfolio.  They carry smaller premiums than their competition and give the investor more value for the amount of money spent.
